It is the absolute pioneer and undisputed leader of the industry. It was founded in 2002 in Boulder, Colorado, by Michael Bissonnette (under the name AeroGrow International). Their breakthrough was being the first company to package complex hydroponic technology into a user-friendly “kitchen appliance” for the average consumer.

• Acquisition: In 2020, it was fully acquired by the gardening giant Scotts Miracle-Gro (owners of brands like Miracle-Gro and Ortho). This provided them with a distribution capacity and financial resources that no other brand could match.

• Current Status (2024-2025): There was a recent “scare.” In late 2024, they announced a temporary suspension of operations that alarmed the community, but they confirmed their relaunch in Spring 2025.
