Big Bertha and NuMex Suave Orange Pepper Germination Failure
Grow log by Shawn · Original thread
What you can learnA clear failed pepper-starting diary documenting dead seeds, reset attempts, prolonged stalling, and a justified early shutdown.
Useful practices
- restarting failed pepper pods
- delaying nutrients while seedlings remained tiny
- performing a full dump and clean before deciding whether to continue
Problems encountered
- dead initial seeds
- repeated replanting
- stalled seedlings
- uncertain seedling identity
- no meaningful vegetative growth
*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.
I would not have the patience to mess with them when something else could be making a lot more progress. But I have had other slow starters that finally took off, too. Maybe bump up the nutrients and see what happens?
I agree with Sher, have you had them on reduced nutrients while they sprouted? If so might trying bumping it up a little and giving them another week or so, and then if they don't take off call them duds?
I will add some extra nutes and give it another week maybe
These were doing nothing so they have been terminated. This machine, well side has been totally cleaned and is ready for new plants. Stay Tuned.
Update #2
Wow! They really are slow!
Update #1

They look so interesting! I love seeing all the different varieties of peppers. Our last frost date is April 30. We had been having such warm weather that we got antsy to plant tomatoes and peppers outdoors a couple of weeks ago. One pepper was a red Big Bertha. And then we got an unexpected night in the 30's and they all died. Aerogardens are wonderful. No worries about when to plant cool or hot season plants!
Actually forgot to plant yesterday so I updated the title and got them planted just now.
Uh, oh...sounds like you've joined our forgetfulness club!
"joined" I have been forgetful for some time and can be a founding member.
You and I both, Shawn. Sounds like we are all charter members, campingcorgis.
Familiar. Perhaps it’s a requirement to be an AG addict? 🤷♂️
You guessed our secret!
Nothing much happening yet.
One of the two pods looks like it has germinated but the other one not so sure. But I forgot to write which plant is which . So I took a sot and planted one seed of what I think it is. Here is hoping I selected the correct one.
Hmmm...this is starting to sound like a rather un-memorable project...I know I have to refer back to my original post for notes and/or the template that I posted, like a "note to self"? I have a feeling these are going to be spectacular peppers and they will be exactly the kind you'll enjoy most!
The seeds in each are dead.. I will be replanting with new seeds. I wil update heading when I do it
Oh, Shawn, I am so sorry! Gardening does teach us to roll with the punches. Even when we hate it!
Oh, dear! Must be something better just waiting to come to life!
I planted these two over again. I will place the template in the first post of what is where
Big Bertha started to germinate. However I think it stalled. Nothing much happening besides the start of a tiny sprout that I think may have died off. I need to further investigate. The Numex Suave Orange is almost at the label. So that will survive, or so I hope. More when it emerges.
Did a total dump, rinse, clean and refill.no nutes yet
Big Bertha is growing and my Suave has a root starting. Taking a long time but am looking forward to it.
I am especially anxious to see the Suave! It looks cool and different.
