What you can learnA complete ornamental trial documenting rapid germination, flowering colours, short bloom duration, spacing limits, and why mature plants were not moved outdoors.

Actions:1 Planting1 Nutrients
Useful practices
  • plant fewer pods in a six-pod garden
  • keep the light as low as practical
  • use moss rose where daily blooms rather than persistent flowers are acceptable
Problems encountered
  • one-day flower lifespan
  • leaf drop when handled
  • tall weedy growth
  • warm room after relocation
  • plants could not be transplanted because of pet toxicity

*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.

Update #7

L By lynnee

Sher , weedy looking is the perfect description for their appearance when I decided to end the garden. I think it's important to keep the light as low as possible.Anyway, here are the colors you get from the AG Moss Rose pod kit (pink, apricot, gold, fuchsia). I love them all.

They're all so pretty! What lovely flowers.

S
Sher

They really are breathtaking, lynnee. Such amazing colors! i grew then on my deck in Georgia. Out in the sun, the plants spread out into a flat rosette shape. If I remember correctly, each flower only lasted a short time, but they flowered so prolifically that there were always blooms on them.

S
Shawn

Lovely colors in that kit.

Update #6

Today there were multiple blooms! These are so beautiful, and I'd never have known about them if Sher hadn't planted some for one of the flower GALs. That's the second apricot bloom--the first one lasted only a day.

Beautiful Lynne. They will all start to bloom. As some die off others will follow. At least that is what happened with mine.

S
Sher

They are spectacular blooms, lynnee! They are so exquisitely shaped and colored.

The Moss Rose Garden is over and done with, as of 6/1/22. The plants had a few buds left, but had grown very tall (almost to full Harvest height). They were messy, with leaves dropping whenever I touched the Harvest to refill the bowl. The blossoms are so beautiful, I'll be growing them again. Next time I'll plant only 3 pods in a 6-pod AG. Biggest knock on moss rose in an AG is that the blooms fade after only 1 day. The colors are outstanding.I'll post a collage of the blooms soon. I couldn't transplant the mature plants outdoors to use as ground cover, because they are toxic to cats and dogs.

S
Sher

I am glad you (and we) got to enjoy their striking beauty for a while, lynnee.

S
Shawn

I am glad you enjoyed them. I wonder why yours grew so tall. I grew Portulacas and they were the perfect size for the Harvest. Who knows....

S
Sher

I grew some that grew straight up into the Harvest lights and got weedy looking. I know they are sun lovers. Maybe they just needed stronger lights? Or, if Shawn grew them successfully in a Harvest, maybe it was the seed vendor's selection of growers.

Update #5

Day 33. This is one of my very favorite colors in a flower! The background is bad for photos, but I needed the downstairs location for a new strawberry garden. Strawberries need to be watched; moss roses don't.

Sher

lynnee, that is my favorite flower color, too! So happy that your first one is so gorgeous!

S
Shawn

Very pretty

L
lynnee

Today the orange flower is gone, but there is a new pretty pink one. I'm going to take pics of the individual blooms, and then post a collage.I was expecting to have a display of blooming flowers--had no idea that moss rose blooms were so short-lived. No doubt it didn't help that the room temp went to 80 degrees F. yesterday. I hate the south-facing window in the second bedroom!

L
lynnee

Does anyone know whether it's normal for Moss Rose leaves to drop off easily when touched? Are the plants too delicate to survive outdoors in full sun for half a day?

S
Shawn

When I grew portulaca flowers some did and some did not.

S
Sher

lynnee, they do sometimes drop leaves. But they love full sun and thrive outdoors. They look delicate, but they are not. They might not be getting enough light indoors. Mine didn't look very healthy in the Harvest.

L
lynnee

Thanks, Shawn and Sher. Mine don't look very happy, but the warmer room temperature after relocation may have a lot to do with it.

S
Sher

lynnee, they love hot temperatures. link

Oh my goodness it's so pretty! I should get some of these!

S
Shawn

Is there wind blowing on them or something maybe?

L
lynnee

Well what do I know about this stuff? I was sure that heat was the problem!

L
lynnee

Could be, because I have a gentle fan going at night.

Update #1

Actions taken

PlantingPlaced half of the twelve-pod Moss Rose kit into a vacant Harvest.

L By lynnee

The 12-pod AG Moss Rose Kit came today! Half the pods went into a vacant Harvest. The kit was shaken up quite a bit in transit, so I hope that the sponges still have seeds in them. (The kit was boxed and not crushed, and there didn't seem to be loose seeds in the kit, but the pods and nutrient bottles were jumbled up.)

This is going to be so exciting! Moss roses are some of my favorite flowers. Delicate and bold at the same time!

S
Shawn

Can't wait to see them grow. Also I would contact AG about all the loose seeds.

Day 3. All pods have germinated! Photos when there is more to see.
