What you can learnAn unusual lavender diary showing flowering without added nutrients and a detailed contamination response involving reservoir replacement, peroxide, harvest, and sanitisation.

Actions:
Useful practices
  • monitoring PPM before deciding whether to feed
  • performing a reservoir rinse-and-refill
  • using hydrogen peroxide after contamination
  • cutting and hanging the lavender to dry
  • cleaning the Sprout with diluted bleach after disposal
Problems encountered
  • a dead mold-covered wasp was found in the reservoir
  • light-blue floating mold spread through the reservoir
  • the grow was ended to reduce the risk of permanent equipment damage

*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.

Ohhh Pretty! How does it smell?

E
ERR0R1755

Definitely smells like lavender

Ended this today. The mold is starting to take over the tank and I want to reduce the risk of permanent damage from it...I cut the lavender at the base, hung it up, and I'll be waiting for it to dry. Not sure what I'll do with it yet.

Is it mold or the green algae?

E
ERR0R1755

Mold. It was a light blue, almost crystallic hexagon shape that floats on the water.I dumped the entire Sprout out outside, and then cleaned it out with diluted bleach.

Is that the flower on top

E
ERR0R1755

I think it's the beginning of the flower!

I bet you can smell the lavender up close or if you brush the bud. I love lavender!

E
ERR0R1755

I had cut off some of the dying leaves before, and they had a very strong smell that lingered on my hand for quite a while. I'm a bit scared to find out how strong the flower itself is

E
ERR0R1755

I opened up the basin to check on the roots, and found a dead, mold-covered wasp...Did a R&R and added a lot of hydrogen peroxide. A lot of it.

Hahah wow. The circle of life!

S
Shawn

How did he get in there?

E
ERR0R1755

I'm not sure. My guess is that it pushed up one of the slot covers I use, since they're pretty lightweight and I've accidentally knocked them out of the AeroGarden before.

it shows the attraction of the lavender you are growing...magic touch!

Smart on his part for lift. Not so smart for falling in LOL

It's tall! I still haven't given it nutrients since I started it, but it seems to have enough according to the PPM.

Promising for sure.

Update #1

Here we go!The leaves are a bit thicker than I expected them to be, but I'm not sure if that's typical for lavender.

I'm so excited to watch it grow! I haven't got a clue about lavender.

E
ERR0R1755

Me neither! I know what the flowers are supposed to look like, but nothing else.
