Park Seed vs. Burpee Sweet Heat Pepper Comparison
Grow log by Shawn · Original thread
What you can learnAn unusually strong comparative diary with controlled placement, vendor-specific observations, maintenance records, repeated harvests, final yield comparison, and a clear cultivar recommendation.
Useful practices
- growing the same cultivar from two vendors side by side
- tracking plant height
- fruit shape
- ripening
- and yield
- regular reservoir rinse-and-refill maintenance
- adding Mooch
- removing damaged leaves
- harvesting peppers through multiple flushes
Problems encountered
- minor browning and residue beneath the Burpee plant
- dense foliage
- late maintenance neglect and low water
*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.
It seems like every day I am picking off at least 4 peppers from each plant. I am not going to keep posting them but I think I have already had about 20 peppers so far if not more.
The Park is plumper?
You are correct MaryL
Hi have so many sweets picked. This morning I sauteed some with onions and added some eggs and cheese. Yum. Tonight I am going to use some in my stuffed chicken breast.
Nutes and Mooch added this morning. Also took a nice harvest of Sweet off (14).
I have a bunch of greens ones with a few starting to change colors.
I have neglected these. I forgot to add Mooch on Sunday so I will just do it this Sunday. I also have not pollinated. After looking this morning boy did I need to add water. I also pollinated and have so many peppers on both. Now I just need them to change colors.
Nutes and Mooch today. Tons of peppers and flowers still. Harvested about 8 sweets last night.
I will be ending this project this weekend. I am going to saute all the peppers on the two plants with dinner. Then I will completely sanitize to begin two new plants. One will be another Sweet Heat I think and the other I have options so I need to decide.
Did you find it an issue planting two sweet heats in one bounty? It seemed like there was enough space -- just curious. Thanks!
gkboyd6, there is plenty of room for two Sweet Heat plants in any large machine (Extra, Ultra or Bounty). One ca even be grown in the Harvest as they only grow no more then 10" for me that I have ever found and I have been growing these consistently for a while now. I hope that helps.
Cool, thanks. Follow-up, I saw you mentioned that you had more than 1 seed germinate per pod. When removing the secondary sprout, is cutting it at the base simply enough? Or must you pull it out completely from the root?
Just cut it at the base.
So what is the final conclusion about the two plants? Are the seeds basically the same?
I found that the Burpee grew a tad taller and wider. The Park Seed produced more peppers and fatter ones. The Burpee were more long then fat. If I were to choose I would pick Parks over Burpee.
I pulled off ALL the peppers, some red, some turning red and some green. I think I pulled about 40+ peppers off. I will be sauteing all with onions and garlic. Then I mix it with, yes it sounds weird and maybe yucky but it is SOOO good... Egg Noodles, Butter and Cottage Cheese. This garden is officially terminated! Great garden, great haul and ready to start another.

I pulled off two sweets, one from each plant. I planned of taking a picture to show how much larger the Park were compared to the Burpee (at least the first two red ones) and they were gone. Mark put them in with his lunch LOL. So it will have to wait until I harvest more as they change colors.
Well they look fabulous. And you have so many!
R&R, Nutes and Mooch Added this morning

Update #15
No R&R today but gave Nutes and Mooch
I need to take pictures but more of the Park peppers are turning red faster then the Burpee side.
Update #14
Topped with water and gave 5ml Mooch.
Update #13
Gorgeous.
R&R, Deep Pump Cleaning (see pics here), 9ml Nutes and 5ml Mooch.
Shawn, how tall are your Sweet Heats?
Kate, both my plants are at 8.5 inches. They stand 9" in the morning. I did not trim either one.
Great, I got another mutant.
I am seeing a tiniest bit of color starting on both plants. Not enough to see it in a picture yet.
Update #12
Still very clone-like, actually. They look really good!
5ml Mooch, next week R&R
Now they look identical. Look at all your peppers!

Ah, so they’re finally revealing their different personalities. Interesting. So far, faster and fatter sounds like the winner. But, as you say things could change. It’s not over til it’s over.
Update #10
Still like clones...or literally clones.
This is a neat project, thank you for sharing!
Do you remember around when you got your first buds? I ask because I may use the 3 part series for mine and will need to guesstimate when to use more of the bloom solution.
I started seeing them approx about a month in.
Ok thank you.
You are Welcome!
FWIW, I feed everyone with the same jug of mix, and they're all doing well. I use more bloom than growth because my two oldest plants are always blooming. My herbs literally grow inches a day, which to be honest is a PITA. I have to cut 1.5-2 inches off typically twice a day, as they grow from inches below the light, to into the light, curving over. My baby plants have all grown quickly and seem healthy. YMMV. I'm just saying I don't have separate solutions for baby plants or herbs. I also don't have a house filled with untold numbers of machines, which may make multiple solutions more sense, or likely a necessity. It seems like it would be more like work than fun (for me) to manage the number of machines some of the group have.
Yes managing a lot of gardens can get to be a lot, which is why I always lag on my Rinse and Refills. I’d rather keep it fun than perfect.

This morning I trimmed a few of the small lowest leaves off. I was not planning on doing that however trying to raise the hood they were in the way. You can't even tell I did it.
They look great!
I am finding that both are pretty equal in fullness, buds and flowers opening. But the Burpee is a little taller plant. The truck is taller. Other then that they are both growing pretty much the same.
Nutes and Mood added as well as top of the water. There are open flowers deep within the dense leaves.
Update #8
Update #7
They almost look like clones of each other.
They’re beautiful.
Day 28 and they received their first R&R. They also received their first dose of Mooch. Nutes added as well!

It will be interesting to see what differences, if any, we all have with the different vendor's seeds.Looking good!
This looks like a fun little fight. Looking forward to watching this grow.
Update #2
Neck and neck!
Update #1
I'm looking forward to seeing how these do side by side. I wouldn't be surprised if they all get their seeds from the same central source. I think I got mine from Reimer, but I'm not sure without pulling out my packets. I got most of my seeds from them, but I did get a few from Burpee. I'll be starting a Sweet Heat in the Harvest when I take down the Fairy Garden...soon.
4 days in and looking into the pods (can't get a clear picture) but there is green growth in them both.
Yay!
Same germination rate, so far. Wouldn’t it have been a bummer if one of them didn’t germinate because it was a bad seed and you had to replant it? It would’ve thrown your whole comparison off. You’d have to replant both, I guess.
BOTH Sweets have at least (that I can see without removing the label) one in each and both of the plants have the top up over the labels. My phone is charging so I can not get nay pictures yet.
