What you can learnA useful spacing lesson showing that a compact cultivar can still overcrowd a six-pod Harvest and may need fewer plants or a larger system.

Actions:1 Planting1 Nutrients
Useful practices
  • testing full six-pod spacing
  • waiting for miniature heads before harvest
  • moving the follow-up trial to a five-gallon Root Farm
  • staggering future plantings by two weeks
Problems encountered
  • one pod failed to sprout
  • six plants were too large and crowded for a Harvest
  • plants did not form the desired heads

*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.

Update #4

They aren't forming heads... I will start harvesting some from here soon. We are eating off my Farm mixed greens right now.

I meant to come back to this... It is too big for a Harvest with six plants. With that said, I didn't come cut and comeback, I was trying to harvest the mini-heads.It had a good flavor.I have moved the follow up planting to a bigger aeroponic garden and I'm staggering the plantings by two weeks. Instead of an aerogarden I'm using a Root Farm garden (5 gallons of water with 4 plants). I planted the second pot today. I should be harvesting the first plant in a month!

These never really did head. I'll keep them in my rotation but I'll use them like my other lettuces.

I am surprised by how little deck space they need. They seem very Aerogarden friendly.

My new Harvest project. This is a tiny heading lettuce. It might be too big for all six pods in the Harvest, but I thought I would give it a try.Seeds: Tom Thumb Lettuce from Baker Creek Heirloom SeedsSponges: AGNutes: AGIn the Harvest:
