Lettuce Harvests after Spinach Germination Failure
Grow log by Shawn · Original thread
What you can learnA clear mixed greens experiment showing total spinach failure alongside two successful lettuce harvests and a measurable feeding response.
Useful practices
- using two spinach and three lettuce seeds per pod
- removing failed spinach positions
- adding a small nutrient dose to stimulate slow lettuce
- taking repeated cut-and-come-again harvests
- cleaning the deck and filter after termination
Problems encountered
- spinach failed to germinate
- lettuce grew slowly before feeding

I feel like a bunny getting a glimpse of heaven!
I harvested my first cut today. I have a HUGE bowl of lettuce. I took a picture of it after the cut (forgot before). I will post them later. I am trying to play catch up here in the house. Also fed 10ml nutes.
Looking forward to the picture!
Nothing much to report. Just waiting for them to grow again so we can have a second harvest.
I harvested another huge bowl of lettuce. I have now ended this garden. I thoroughly cleaned the bowl, deck filter. I will be planting something new later.
I am looking forward to seeing what you plant next!
Update #4
Yes! They look good!
Update #3
They look happy!
They are growing SOOOO SLOW..... I may give them some nutes to see if that kick starts them.
That should make a difference.
I ended the spinach. Nothing at all. In a couple of weeks I will try to soak them and put in paper towels to see if I can get them to sprout. In the meantime, I did add just a couple ml of nutes to the water and the lettuce is growing although slow. I think I need to add more but will in a few days when it it time.
Good plan!
I've tried starting spinach seeds a few times and they seem tricky to me. I still haven't figured those out.
Yikes! Think I'll leave this to the more seasoned gardeners!
I added nutes yesterday morning and i see a difference today
Glad the lettuce perked up!

No labels on the pods?
Since there are not nutes yet I did not place them on. Also these will spread so I may not need them.
Cool! And, good to know.
I love that stage when the lettuce is just up -- and you get to see them go to salad size in no time!
Not much growth since last time (Will update later this morning). Still nada in the spinach. I will give it a little more time them I will pull them.

I'm very interested to watch the progress of this garden! Sounds like many wonderful salads and meals are ahead. Have you grown the spinach before? What can you share about it?
What a perfect combination of spinach and lettuce!
I have never grown spinach. Mark likes it so we thought to try it.
I will look forward to Mark's future reviews!
All the lettuce are germinating. Nothing in the spinach as of yet.
Shawn, there was a discussion quite a while ago about spinach being difficult to germinate in an Aerogarden. One person had success germinating the seeds in wet paper towels, then placing them in the sponges. If your spinach doesn't come up, that might be something you could try.
I know it is rough to get it to grow but I might as well try it.
I believe I see something in one of my Spinach pods. I need to take a closer look.
