What you can learnA concise small-container Kratky example demonstrating inexpensive light blocking, reservoir inspection, and reuse of a surplus seedling.

Actions:1 Transplant1 Equipment1 Finished
Useful practices
  • transplanting an extra seedling from another project
  • blocking light with foil and an opaque fabric sleeve
  • using the removable sleeve to inspect reservoir level
  • repurposing a convenience-store cup for Kratky growing
Problems encountered
  • the grower was uncertain which premixed nutrient formula was used
  • the nutrient solution was allowed to run out
  • final harvest details were not recorded in text

FinishedEnded the grow after deciding not to refill the depleted nutrient solution.

Ended this today! I don't care enough about the plant to refill the nutrient solution (since I was using up what I had), but it turned out well. Not sure what I'll do with it yet.

I love your unusual seed plantings Error. Are you planning to grow to harvest the greens or the roots?

I'm planning to grow it for the roots, although I'll probably eat some of the greens along the way

Actions taken

TransplantMoved an extra kohlrabi seedling from an AeroGarden project into a Kratky container.
EquipmentAdded foil to the lid and covered the cup with an old sock to reduce light penetration.

I took one of the extra Early Purple Vienna Kohlrabi seedlings from my Harvest project and placed it in a Kratky container.I taped some small pieces of foil on the lid of a cup from 7-11, and covered the outside of a cup with an old sock. (very convenient for checking the water level)I think the nutrients I'm using are MaxiGro? I keep some gallons of pre-mixed nutrient solution on hand for watering some of my smaller containers/bottles, but I never label them so I don't know what they actually are.
