My friends plant Milkweeds just to have the Monarchs breed on their property. I really like them, too.
I terminated my violas a couple of weeks ago that I was growing in the summer. Mine grew very well also. I got tired of the daily pruning of the dead flowers. I've currently started a harvest of aerogarden gazanias and another harvest of cascading petunias. The gazanias are new to me. My last garden of petunias was amazing! Also currently growing 5 different peppers, 2 different tomatos, cucumbers, herbs: basil, parsley, dill, thyme and 4 different kinds of MINT (Here I come, mojito!)

mike I've never grown milkweed, but my parents do for the monarchs! They and I both also have a bunch of maxmillian sunflowers around our houses that the butterflies really love to land on. @fsullom, your flower AGs sound amazing!! I've never grown gazanias before but they look super pretty, I hope they do well for you!! lynnee I haven't trimmed or deadheaded the violas at all. I have the marigolds though! The monarch wasn't in any hurry to leave the flowers it had landed on, but I did have to wait a bit for it to open up its wings!! Patience paid off
I love the Monarchs. Here's a pic of the Monarch Caterpillar and a Chrysalis the day the butterfly hatched.
I've always thought it was funny that both monarchs and the black swallowtail butterflies go from that to something so pretty!! I've never liked caterpillars in general, but always found those two particularly ugly while finding their butterfly forms especially pretty. Worth feeding for sure, with what they turn into. Dad found out a few years ago that the swallowtail caterpillars LOVE parsley, so he always makes a point to plant extra for them to eat, along with the milkweed for the monarchs
Are they particular about the kind of parsley? Curly, flat, Chinese?
lol I think Dad just plants flat, because that's what he's familiar with. I bet they like all kinds though!
Did you save any seeds?
No, it didn't really form seeds that I felt like I could collect. The seeds that I put in the pods were smallish, but you could still tell they were sunflower seeds. But what was in the flower heads was teeny-tiny, barely visible! Not something I wanted to pick through
My Bambino was the same way: no seeds that looked at all like sunflower seeds.

Wow! That's a lovely farm of flowers! How big is that sunflower going to grow? I think I like growing aerogarden flowers. You can arrange them like a florists bouquet with the bonus that they don't wilt in a week!
Bambinos are supposed to get no bigger than 16 inches tall. This guy feels taller that that, but I haven’t measured. Hopefully it won’t get any taller, I’ve already raised the light as far as I can!

The flower display is fabulous, maskedsonnet! I love your Bambino best, though. My Bambino produced only a single bloom, so I'm a bit envious. The plant does stop growing at 16"--I don't think it will grow taller than that first sunflower.Great butterfly photo, too!

I tried the marigolds recently in a harvest. I did the same thing. They really grew dense and took a long time to bloom. When they did bloom, they were a bit too big for the harvest and were growing into the light. I've started a bounty full of violas. I'll post a pic when they are "bounty-ful"

Those are going to be pretty! Do you intend to transplant them somewhere eventually?
Probably not, if I do they will go to the garage to see how they do out there. I've pretty much stopped the outdoor stuff for now, I just don't have the time and energy to keep up with it right now. The AGs and the garage keep me well occupied!

The violas should stay nice and small and not crowd the greens out. And their flowers are edible, too. Pretty in salads, on cake frosting, or frozen in ice cubes.

Marigolds are edible!! I've never eaten them but they add a nice flavor brewed with teas. The lettuce is Tom Thumb and Little Gem And I DO love the the potential of planting new gardens!! Imagining what they'll look up when they come up is always so fun!
Oh I love marigolds! We used to grow them in elementary school in little pots on the classroom windowsill.
They're very nearly my favorite flower!! I've always thought the blooms were very cute. I only wish I could grow my actual faves in AG, but sunflowers are too big!! Especially the Maximilians, I love them dearly but they're big-time spreaders that I don't think would even do well in a pot, much less AG. Though I admittedly have never tested that theory!
I also love marigolds. I used to grow them in my deck planters in Georgia and interspersed in my veggie gardens when I did square foot gardening. areyoukittenme, the mental picture of marigolds growing in windowsills in a classroom is sweet.
