They are beautiful and looks like you'll be enjoying them soon!

S
Shawn

I hope so I have been waiting for some color changes.

S
Sher

They look great! So well groomed. They look like triplets.

S
Shawn

They are taking FOREVER to change colors. I can not find a one that is starting.

S
Sher

That is so frustrating!

C
campingcorgis

Sounds like they are living on Hawaii time!

S
Shawn

Gave Nutes and Mooch today

S
Shawn

I FINALLY see some changing of colors on two plants. They are getting darker in color and a few have a very deep red starting. As soon as I can I will have Mark get a picture. I can't get them yet

S
Shawn

Today I picked a few peppers and before I could photo them they were ingested... an d not be me LOL anyway, here is a quick assessment of two... Heritage Chile - NuMex Joe E Parker: Had a really nice medium heat. Sweet and pleasant flavor. Minimal seeds and nicely sized. Paprika Pepper - Hungarian Magyar: Had a really nice sweet smell. However was a little sour note but sweet. Minimal seeds. I will get pictures next time.

S
Shawn

UPDATE: While they might have a slightly sour taste raw, cooked these are wonderful and sweet with a great flavor. I diced a few up and cooked them with some eggs. I toasted one of my own handmade everything bagels, added breakfast chicken sausage with a slice of low sodium provolone then then the egg with a slice of provolone. This was Mark's breakfast. I just had a nibble ,,, I am not a breakfast person that early in the morning.

S
Shawn

Took the last of the peppers off the Hungarian Magyar and they are now in the freezer until I want to use them. The right side will get scrubbed next week. The right side is still looking good and I am getting red peppers from the Spanish Padron often. The NuMex Joe E Parker are slowly growing but they are pretty big. I will try to get a picture. Nutes were added yesterday as well.

S
Shawn

We had our first Heritage Chile - NuMex Joe E Parker Pepper today. It was thick walled, juicy and sweet. There is a slight kick, half the temp of a jalapeno. However the heat is in the seeds. This is a keeper. I will take a pic of the next one.

S
Sher

That sounds like a must grow, Shawn. Looking forward to your pictures!

S
Shawn

TOday I ended the NuMex and am waiting for a few tapas peppers to redden. Then I will end that. I need top deep clean this unit and am eager to start new peppers. I hope to do this over the weekend.

L
lynnee

Looking forward to your new pepper garden!

S
Shawn

This garden has been terminated. All peppers have been removed whether red or green. These are hot but yummy. The basins and decks have been thoroughly cleaned. I am planning the next for this garden. Stay tuned.

S
Sher

I am anxious to see what you plant next!

WooHoo!!!

Fabulous peppers, Shawn! I hope that you didn't do anything bad to your back. It's almost impossible NOT to violate the doctor's orders when you see a disaster like that about to happen.

S
Shawn

Even if I followed everything perfectly you still cannot follow everything.

Update #3

S By Shawn

ok so here are some pictures. I had no clue there were peppers (ok maybe only one or two) on the plants. They have not been pollinated other then by a fan since I can not bend. The two sides: Hungarian Magyar: Please excuse the mess... Spanish Padron: I could not get the picture of the Como di Toro..

Sher

They look happy and flourishing!

L
lynnee

Don't you love it when you find harvestable peppers that you never noticed were there? I have to prune my banana and bell peppers tomorrow, and am hoping to see more peppers.

S
Shawn

Yes I do lynnee. I just wish I could bend so I can thin some leaves out. Maybe I can have Mark do it. I am getting frustrated that I can't care for them. However thrilled there are peppers

L
lynnee

The pepper pruning finally got done today. I find it hard to decide what to prune, and did a lot of twisting around to see underneath and above the plant. The growth patterns are kind of unpredictable. You are no doubt a more skilled pepper pruner than I am, but probably you shouldn't do the pruning for yourself right now! (What I lack in skill, I do make up for in fearlessness, and the plants seem to survive.)

S
Shawn

lynnee, I sat on a chair right in front of the plants amd trimmed what I could keeping myself safe. I did a pretty good job. At least with what I could reach.

L
lynnee

Good job! I'd have probably done the same thing. The "no lifting, twisting, bending" stuff gets old fast, and you get good at finding workarounds. 😄

S
Shawn

Tell me about it. Especially since this is my 4th back surgery. However this one was a lot of work. They had to remove then add hardware and it was several levels of it. I am only three weeks out today and feel ok at times but this is a bear as far as pain goes.

L
lynnee

Sorry to hear that you're still having pain. 🙁🙁🙁When I slipped on a sweet gum pod and broke my femur, the surgeon put in a titanium rod. He said that it would be "a mess" if I broke the bone again (at least before it was fully healed). Hardware removal is difficult in the best of situations, and I can imagine that the difficulty is greatly increased when your spine is involved.

C
campingcorgis

Oh, geez! I'm so sorry about the pain and the difficulties too. For both of you, lynnee & Shawn!!

L
lynnee

Oh, campingcorgis, I don't deserve any sympathy at present! The broken femur happened in 2016. It did require a 10-day stay in a skilled nursing center, a fair amount of rehab, and instructions about not lifting, etc. for a while. 🙂

S
Shawn

Yesterday I was able to trim more leaves out and open them up for air circulation. Well this morning we almost had a disaster. Reaper decided to clean the mess from the decks. That not only took pff some more leaves but also a few peppers. AND.... a flood! I thankfully walked out into the room as this started and was able to get the center plug back in. I of course also bent down and twisted... which I should not have done but if I did not all that water would be all over my hard wood floor. I yelled at the reaper and the reaper made some passive aggressive remarks. Thankfully the reaper will leave Wednesday morning if I can not make that happen tomorrow.

S
Sher

Oh, Shawn! I wish you could find someone else to help you! And I hope with all my heart your back wasn't damaged.

I finally see something in that last pod .. YAY

S
Sher

YAYYYYYY!!!!!

S
Shawn

I need to replant my Como di Toro seeds. While the red one was going great the casing would not come off the leaves and died out. SO I will plant one of each again today. I will wait another week before thinning the other plants.

S
Shawn

Nutes added

S
Shawn

I thinned all down to one plant

S
Shawn

Everyone received their nutes on Sunday. I forgot to give Mooch however.

S
Shawn

I am so mad at myself. I pruned one of the peppers and I think I stunted it. I am letting it be to see how it does. THe others are doing well. I trimmed some leaves out for air flow. Once my phone charges I will get a picture.

S
Shawn

Nutes added. I forgot to add Mooch. I will do that shortly.

Peppers are very hardy plants, you can cut back up to 90% of the plant and it will easily recover as long as enough of the main stem and some of the roots are intact.

S
Shawn

Thanks they are doing well. I need to take a picture

S
Shawn

THe peppers are doing really well. I had put in the chives and oregano but the chives are all wilted from overshadowing. I will have those removed later today. I will also have my mother remove the oregano and I will place it in the freezer. Mark will shake the plants this weekend and feed them for me. If I were able to bend I would do it myself but no BLT's for me (bend, lifts or turns).

S
Sher

It's do good to see you posting, Shawn. I just put a big bag of basil in the freezer last night.

S
Shawn

Nutes added and did they need them. They are a week late but I finally got them fed. Mark had added water for me but the reaper "forgot" to feed them. Anyway they look good and they were given a light shake and there are peppers. Now IF I can I will get a picture. I may not as I can not bend.

L
lynnee

My recalcitrant pepper started blooming after a major root trim, but then dropped some of the blooms. I was thinking about taking it out, to give the other pepper more room in the Bounty. Then I read somewhere that peppers will drop their blooms if they're subjected to high and low temperatures. The room that the peppers are in gets full afternoon sun, and it's been 80-88 degrees F. In the evenings, more like 74 degrees in the mornings. So I can hardly blame the plant for dropping blooms, can I? I do get attached to my plants, and always hate to terminate them. 😍

S
Shawn

So do I, however over the years I found if they truly are not doing what they should I will replant.

Update #1

PlantingStarted NuMex, Padron, Corno di Toro, and Hungarian Magyar peppers in the documented layout.

S By Shawn

UPDATED with info and placement.A couple pf weeks ago Renee's had a half price sale and I bought several packets. Mark liked the selection so I am giving these a try. I have others from other vendors should they not work out. LEFT SIDE: Heritage Chile - NuMex Joe E Parker: Our favorite authentic New Mexico style chile with long, straight, 6-7 inch meaty pods, a medium heat level and rich, full flavor. Early-producing plants have heavy, consistent yields, and dense foliage that protects pods from sunburn. Harvest thick-walled, juicy pods at either the green or red stage. Perfect for memorable green or red chile, wonderful salsas, or for grilling, sautéing or adding gentle heat to any dish. Tapas Peppers - Spanish Padron: These hard-to-find, authentic specialty peppers are from the Galicia region of Spain. Picked small, then quickly sizzled in fruity olive oil, Padron peppers make delicious traditional Spanish "Tapas" appetizers. Once you taste these savory little mouthfuls, you are guaranteed to want more! The tapered fruits begin bearing earlier than other peppers, and produce in abundance over a very long harvest season. RIGHT SIDE: Italian Roasting Peppers - Corno di Toro Mix: Corno di Toro or “Bull’s Horn” sweet peppers are traditional Italian summer favorites. The tall, branching plants bear heavy sets of spectacular, 8 to 12 inch long, curved, tapered and pointed shiny peppers whose thick, sweet flesh colors up to bright yellow or vivid red. These colorful, flavorful big beauties are perfectly delicious fresh or use for roasting and grilling. Seeds are color coded with USDA food grade stain to distinguish varieties. Red seed = Islero F1 and Undyed seed = Giallo Paprika Pepper - Hungarian Magyar: We import this variety from Hungary where it is widely recognized for making top-quality sweet paprika. These early ripening plants produce heavy yields of slender, pointed, 4-inch crimson-red peppers. Once harvested, simply dry them and grind into sweet paprika spice powder that offers wonderful, rich, full-bodied flavor and is an excellent source of vitamin C.

Updated the first post with all the information

S
Shawn

Still waiting for action but of course it is still early.

S
Shawn

The NuMex Joe E Parker, Como di Toro Red and Hungarian Maygar all have germinated. I htink htere is life in the other two but can not really tell yet.

S
Sher

Yay! New life! It is always so exciting! Especially peppers!

S
Shawn

Yes, now to keep fingers crossed they do well.

S
Shawn

One pepper is almost over the top of the sponge

S
Shawn

All have life except for the yellow roasting pepper. However I can not see both seeds so there is still hope. Two have popped out over the sponge top. Waiting for another to pop up and I will get a picture.
