Useful practices
- changing water every three days
- comparing media side by side
- harvesting at true-leaf emergence
- cleaning and reusing silicone mesh
- avoiding vinegar on reusable silicone
Problems encountered
- high-pH water damage
- silicone sheet curling after vinegar sanitation
- some seeds falling through silicone mesh
*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.
Day 6 for the tray and it looks similar to last night's photo, only maybe a little taller. I can't see it taking longer than 9 days to be ready for harvest, but it might well surprise me and be ready sooner. It's looking very good, I'm not seeing any problems with mold or fungus.I changed the water for freshly made nutrient water. And also did this for the AG microgreens kit growing broccoli, as it was day 3 there, and that's when I usually change water and add the first nutrition. I've got lots of germination there!Nutrition:1.0ml GH CALiMAGic (My tap water is soft and generally reads ZERO on my EC meter, so this may not be necessary for others!)5.6g GH MaxiGro5.0ml of 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxideThis produces an EC of 1.6 and and normally comes up as a pH of 6.0 down from straight tap water at pH 8.5. It's possible this would be too strong for other varieties of microgreens, but the brassicas have been loving it!

So far, no curling issues with the one piece of silicone that is being reused. I planted straight BROCCOLI microgreens about an hour ago, just checked the garden, and no curling! If it were going to do it, it would have done so already. Last time, it was nearly immediate. My advice, is don't sanitize silicone with vinegar. I wouldn't try citric or any other food-safe acid either.Stay tuned to see how TRAY growing on silicone mesh works out! I'm impressed so far with how quickly things are proceeding! For the curious, the Mason jar vacuum sealer I'm using for stashing my microgreens in the fridge, along with the little tool for prying the lid off again. I was dubious, but I have really enjoyed this item in the kitchen! It does regular and wide-mouth jars, and should be nice for preserving extra harvests of other greens. I also use it for chopped jicama or sweet potato to juice, since I'm usually not needing the whole piece of produce to make a juice with.
Wow Thank you again pfunnyjoy for such great and detailed information. This is definitely a bookmarked post I will come back to. I purchased the silicone mat from your Etsy link and will give it a go. Such fun. You have me curious now as well with the vacuum jar sealing!

How strange! You might try testing a small piece of new silicone mat by soaking it in vinegar. I would think that heat might cause the mat to curl, but vinegar? Maybe the microgreens roots caused the curl?
The suspect piece of silicone mat is, today, feeling normally pliable and laying perfectly flat on the kitchen counter. Where last night, it was curling no matter what. I have no idea if it has "memory" and may yet curl again when exposed to water. It is very strange! I will, naturally, eventually try it. And I won't be using vinegar the next time I sanitize these!
Maybe it's haunted!
It was really weird. It felt stiff and would curl on one side, but then if you flipped it and tried to get it flat, it would promptly curl on the other two sides. Currently, it seems pliable and flat, but I don't know what will happen next time it gets exposed to liquid.
Is that silicone mat made out of the same stuff as silicone bakeware? Like those soft, pliable silicone muffin 'pans'?I kind of remember seeing something somewhere about not using vinegar on those.
I don't do microgreens BUT for all you microgreenies, this item was just listed by the guy who makes "stuff" with his 3D printer. Grow microgreens in your slim: www.etsy.com/listing/1691314857
All I know is that it is food-grade silicone, so maybe. I won't be using vinegar on silicone grow mats again, just in case! I may have to cut another if I've ruined the one, but I'll wait and see what happens the next time I put it in.
That's interesting! Although, given I'd like to eat a LOT more microgreens than the 2 cups worth the AG gives me every 12-14 days, I may experiment with trays. I've bought one 7x14 tray from On the Grow and have wheatgrass going in that now, though I didn't soak enough seed to fill it all the way. So far, so good. I'll see how it does with the wheatgrass, then maybe try a microgreen grow before deciding if it's worth getting another couple trays.
I was all about that microgreen tray for the slim until I looked at the price. That’s more than the Aerogarden one which I thought was overpriced!

It's good to know that a bit of damage doesn't really interfere with the enjoyment of microgreens!I'm so lucky--our tap water tests at 7.0 pH. The water comes from the same mountain sources that get bottled and sold as spring water, and is only tainted by the usual chemicals added to municipal water.
You are lucky!I did notice that laying the silicone mat just in tray, no seeds on top, it was wanting to curl while I was sanitizing. I turned it the other way and put it in the other tray and it flattened out, but then when laying on the counter, wanted to curl at the edges again. Remains to be seen if this will be an issue for re-use, but I'll update if it becomes a problem.I've got the Harvest circulating water now.
Day 0The Harvest Elite is back in action with more Spicy Mix seeds. I'd meant to try some broccoli seeds I'd gotten for sprouting, until I got tired of the mess of getting the hulls out of the sprouts and stopped growing the sprouts. However, they were in the fridge, and I'd forgotten I'd need to get them out to come to room temp before opening the bag, so, spicy mix again it is!Using silicone mats on both sides this time.

Have you harvested all of these yet, pfunnyjoy?Have you tried cleaning the silicone mat?

It's really interesting to see how your microgreens are doing on the different mats, pfunnyjoy!
Thank you so much pfunnyjoy for your detailed and informative post. I would love to see a follow up picture of the microgreens when they are ready to harvest. I am currently using cheesecloth as an alternative and I’m really curious to see how your silicone mat turns out. I am wondering after you grow the greens on the silicone mat how easy or hard it will be to remove the roots and clean it. Thanks again
I tried cheesecloth twice and it didn’t work. The first time I used several layers and then I tried again using 1 layer and still no luck. The only thing I have had success with so far has been the Aerogarden felt. I see Park Seed has some made of Hemp that come in 2 different sizes. Has anyone tried these?
Don't worry, I do plan to update with pictures once they are ready to harvest. I generally harvest at the point true leaves start to appear. No experience yet, but the videos I've watched suggest that it is quite easy to remove roots and clean the silicone. At least that's what I'm hoping!
I did see the Aerogarden Experiments guy using cheesecloth as an alternate. Personally, I didn't like the way it looked; call me fussy. And I wasn't convinced I'd like cleaning/sanitizing it afterwards. So far the Micro-Mat mini (wood pulp) media seems to be doing very well. So I'd consider that a great alternative, and likewise for the silicone.I just looked up the Park Seed Hemp mats and I don't see why those couldn't work nicely! However, they are a tad more expensive than the Micro-Mat minis, which cost me $17.59 for 48 on Amazon. The Park 5x5 Hemp mats run $19.95 for 40.

It seems that you love microgreens as much as I do. I have two harvest always giving greens and one bounty which I rarely use because it’s a pain to set up. Anyway.. every now and then I go through all my seed packs, pull the greens that are old or that I will not grow again, mix them all together and have a great microgreen mix. It’s fun because you use up all those leftover seeds and you never know exactly what microgreens you’ll get! Saves money, too.
That's a great idea and one I'll definitely incorporate! I've got a white tray from On the Grow on order, to see how that goes. I really need more than the AG kit has room for, as I can eat a tray at a time easily! I think the 7"x14" size will be a great size for putting around the Aerogardens. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have a cup of microgreens as a daily salad or addition to my eggs.

So far, so good. I wasn't sure if I'd wake up to dry looking seeds on the right, but it seems like they are getting enough moisture regardless of the silicone mat's tendency to float. I'm seeing signs of germination in both trays already. The water bubbling has floated some of the seeds off the Micro-Mat.
