Resilient Shishito and Criolla de Cocina Peppers in an AeroGarden Bounty
Grow log by maskedsonnet · Original thread
What you can learnA strong two-cultivar comparison covering sanitation, thinning, canopy management, fruit-set failure, colour-stage flavour differences, and repeated harvests.
Useful practices
- sanitising an old garden before replanting
- thinning multiple pepper seedlings
- raising the light and pruning bushy peppers
- comparing green and fully red Shishito flavour
- removing a nonproductive cultivar
- harvesting in several stages
Problems encountered
- Criolla de Cocina failed to set peppers despite heavy flowering
- Shishito repeatedly grew into the light and required canopy control
- green Shishito fruit tasted grassy

Very nice haul!
They look wonderful and I look forward to seeing what you will grow next.
Those are so beautiful! I wish that more of my peppers would turn red like that!
Update #17
Look at all those Red Peppers!
Glad you are feeling better!!
Being sick is never fun
So glad you are recovering, maskedsonnet. Your peppers are gorgeous! All those flowers at the same time as ripe peppers is really special!

That plant is so loaded! And the peppers are just beautiful!
The photo of the peppers in the colander belongs in a coffee-table cookbook!
It’s absolutely my favorite shade of red too. They’re delicious AND my favorite color, which makes them super fun to eat!!

Too bad about the cocina, but your shishito has made up for the loss. My shishito has flowers, and has one developing pepper, I think. I hope it does as well as yours!

You have so many peppers! Are you letting them all go red?
I had to run to Google for an answer to that lol, I didn’t know shishitos turned red! I’m going to leave several on there to turn, and pick some others while green to compare the flavor and figure out which way I like best!
Update #10
Tons of flowers

You are a master pruner, maskedsonnet! The plants look great, and you've kept most of the blossoms.
Good job! They look great and I'm betting they will bring great rewards too!

I love how you label them. You and Mike are good at that.
Can't wait to see how the shishito peppers turn out! I have some of the Aerogarden shishito pods. I've no idea how they taste.
Lol I have the WORST memory, and while I’m not that likely to forget what I actually planted in the machine, I always think - why risk it when it’s as simple as some masking tape and a pen? I’m looking forward to tasting both of these, I’ve never grown or eaten either one. I’ve heard shishito is tasty - sweet and smoky, occasionally spicy - and the cocina had a nice-sounding description, also a sweet pepper! I had originally planned to do a couple super-hots in this machine, and even though I haven’t had any problems easing back to my regular diet after surgery, I’m still a bit nervous eating anything hotter than a jalapeño right now
Sounds like a very wise move to me!
