loose leaf is usually on the mildly bitter 'greens' side as to taste.whereas on the other end something like iceberg is on the more watery,bland side with hardly any taste.

That look SOOOOO delicious! I just looked at my store bought lettuce in the refrig just now and it is stale looking compared to your nice fresh produce, Shawn! Am about to post about something I just purchased yesterday for lettuce. I'll be over to yours for salad next week if Mark doesn't gobble it all.

I've got some seedlings going. (The ones that you sent me.) So far, I can't see any difference between the two :-)Edit: While they have similar shapes, textures and tastes, the Dragoon has a nicer, deeper color.

That was a wonderful project. It makes me want to grow lettuce now when my peppers are ripe and harvested.

from what I read that is one of the toughest seeds to get started .Ever try damp paper towels on top of a heating pad for a few hours each day?

That’s a good idea to keep the 2nd lettuce garden in the same thread. I should do that with my ever revolving herb gardens. I end up confusing myself as to where things are.

No problem. As long as the sponge has its 'feet' dipped in the water, the moisture will 'wick' to the top of the sponge. That;s all that is needed for germination.(pump is off most of the time in germ mode)I have started seeds in sponges just sitting in 1/2 inch of water in paper cups!

Agree with Corinne. In fact, the older machines were bubblers and had no pump and no channels in the deck. The bubbler just brought oxygen into the water, and the pods got their water simply from the wicking up.

I am on day 29 now with my lettuce plants. I did the first cleaning with bleach water an it was quite simple. Also trimmed the roots a bit so they were not so straggly. New distilled water and nutrients so they are good to go. The lettuces do taste very good. Don't think we would find them like that in a produce isle.I am sitting here now looking at them and almost can see them growing taller after cutting them two days ago.

Shawn, you might find that your lettuces grow at an increasingly rapid rate. Perhaps it's because they have more leaf area to absorb the light/energy Edit: And because they have more ROOTS!

I found that mine ran slower than the loose leaf kind. I think they look great!

That’s a good observation about loose leaf versus the more compact heads. I hadn’t thought of it. It’s been a long time since I grew lettuce too.

And..y'all gotta get your Bok Choi groove on as well!

I leave the labels on, and I leave the domes on til the seedlings grow about half way up the height of the dome. But that’s just me. I don’t think you can go wrong with lettuce.

You may see my lettuce with no labels, but I sometimes take tham off just for a photo. Anyway..I slit one side of the label and put the center around the stems of the seedlings. Otherwise they will just try to grow out of the hole and, not being fastened down, the label will just get pushed upward on top of the seedlings. When the plants get spread out enough in the pod to cover the sponge from light, I remove the label. I don't leave the domes on very long...just until they breach the pod. in my house they don;t need more heat or dampness. All seems to be coming along fine, SHawn! Yay!
