Faux Poinsettia Polka Dot Plants with Slow Growth and Leaf Spots
Grow log by Shawn · Original thread
What you can learnA short ornamental failure report showing that successful germination does not guarantee healthy growth and that lighting, seed age, and leaf symptoms may remain ambiguous.
Useful practices
- testing stored ornamental seed
- swapping the light base while troubleshooting poor growth
- trial feeding before deciding whether to terminate
Problems encountered
- very slow growth
- uncertain colour labelling
- possible weak lighting
- dark spots on leaves
- possibly aged seed
*The days were calculated automatically and approximately.
Have you upped the nutrients on them, Shawn? Something is stunting them.
Yes I have
I notice the color is off..they are more yellow than green(maybe it is your camera). Something is unusual for sure. There is a difference in growth, though, so the different light may change things around. I can see red as well. I would keep it for another week if it were my project and see what happens if it were my project.
Maybe the seeds being a year old? I just gave 4ml of nutes. Lets see if that helps.
Those look odd to me too, but I don't have any specific advice as to why. Have you grown seeds from this packet before? I've had something similar once when a plant disease carried through into the seeds.
1 year old seeds are still good.
I will see if the nutes I gave helped. If not I will just ditch these and grow something else. I hope they make progress as I love my Holiday Dots every year.
Fingers crossed!
This is ending today. Some of the leaves are getting dark spots on them. I will find something else to grow. Anyone have suggestions? Please?
Some ideas:(not for the Holidays, though) Snaptini Gazanias Pansy Swizzel Zinnias Mt Meadow Flower Kit are the flowers I have starting in my machines. My next project will be this colorful mix: parkseed.com/search.aspx?ss=magellan+zinnias I have used a former project as an avatar in the past and it is quite colorful.(1.1/2 ft tall) So those are my ideas I have to share!
I will look into those. I am using a Harvest so the Magellans may not work.
Sorry the dots didn't work out, Shawn. So disappointing, isn't it? Hope the next project thrives for you.
No problem. Nothing like starting something new.
your last snaptini project was pretty in the Harvest.Harris has them in stock. www.harrisseeds.com/products/23553-snapdragon-snaptini-mix-f1
Update #3
I can certainly see the reds!
These look about the same. 21 days and not much growth. Kinda disappointing. I wonder if it is because they are last years seeds?
Could be the light, shawn ?
I have always grown them in the same Harvest. So maybe the lights are not strong? I have another Harvest. I will (if I can I will switch the machine out and see if that helps. If I can I will just switch the light out.
I switched out the base (light attached to it). Lets see if it grows better.
Update #2
The suspense!
Update #1
Actions taken
That is going to look so festive!
It will look lovey. I did outside raking and pulling up of more summer plants and only got 1/2 done(ran out of bags). The trees are still full! My landscape guy's daughter passed away this week so he won;t be here until after the rains this week...nature will have to have her way..but the exercise felt SOOO good! All that to say..my Faux project won;t get started until tomorrow.
I looked these up. I like the red ones. I think they would go well in the room I have my Celosia in right now. Have bookmarked for a future project.
I looked deep into each pod and there is some life. Just not enough to photograph.
All seeds have germinated (2 per pod) and now I just need to wait and see if the colors are what I thought they are
So happy for you!
Fast Fast Fast!
